Luke 1:38
Annunciation at the Priory Window
“I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May it happen to me according to your word.” Then the angel left her.
Mary and Gabriel meet with two choir children at a window opening onto a colorful landscape in Denis’s Annunciation.
About the artwork
Denis organizes the scene through areas of color and a window that connects the intimate interior with the landscape outside. The added children give the encounter a ceremonial company, while the domestic setting brings the sacred subject into a place that feels inhabited rather than remote.
The 1916 painting refers to Le Prieuré, the former hospital Denis bought in 1914 and made his home. It brings his religious subject into his own surroundings. The window is therefore more than a neutral backdrop: it joins a modern lived space with the older visual tradition of Gabriel arriving before Mary.

What does Luke 1:38 mean?
Luke 1:38 is Mary’s answer after Gabriel has explained the promised child and the action of the Holy Spirit. She identifies herself as the Lord’s servant and accepts what has been spoken. The verse then closes the encounter with the angel’s departure.
The choir children and priory setting belong to Denis’s interpretation, while the scriptural focus remains the response. Reading the verse beside the domestic scene lets the announcement take place within a familiar world without confusing that world with Luke’s Nazareth. Mary’s assent is the event that connects them.
Denis brings Mary’s assent into the familiar setting of his priory home, making the biblical response the center of a modern devotional scene.
