Luke 1:38
Cestello Annunciation
“I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May it happen to me according to your word.” Then the angel left her.
Mary and the kneeling Gabriel extend their hands toward one another across a nearly empty room in Botticelli’s Cestello Annunciation.
About the artwork
The interval between the hands is the picture’s dramatic center. Gabriel bends forward and Mary’s body answers with a sweeping turn, so the two figures seem related by movement before they touch. The spare interior gives those gestures room to remain unmistakable.
Mary’s upper body leans back toward her reading stand even as one hand reaches toward Gabriel. The kneeling angel advances with raised palm and streaming drapery. Against the room’s straight floor lines and rigid doorway, these opposing curves make the encounter unsettled. The painting, made for Cestello in 1489–1490, gives bodily form to a response that contains both withdrawal and approach.

What does Luke 1:38 mean?
Luke 1:38 is Mary’s acceptance of Gabriel’s word after the announcement of Jesus’ birth. The preceding verses explain the promise and answer her question; her reply identifies her as the Lord’s servant. The story then marks the angel’s departure.
The paired verse comes at the end of a conversation that has included Mary’s disturbance and her question. Her backward lean and extended hand can be read in that larger sequence, without assigning every gesture to one exact instant. The assent in Luke does not erase the difficulty of what she has just heard; Botticelli’s poised, divided movement leaves room to consider both.
The nearly meeting hands turn Mary’s spoken assent into a visible exchange between the arriving messenger and the person who receives the promise.
