Luke 1:41-42
Visitation on the Staircase of Silencio
When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. In a loud voice she exclaimed, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!”
Mary climbs sunlit steps toward Elizabeth while a woman watches from a window in Denis’s Visitation at Silencio.
About the artwork
The staircase gives the greeting a visible approach. Mary’s ascent leads toward Elizabeth, while the watcher at the window adds another level of attention. Sunlight connects the figures through the architecture, making the meeting part of the life of a house rather than an isolated emblem.
The house is Silencio, Denis’s family home at Perros-Guirec in Brittany, and the watcher at the window is Élisabeth Graterolle, his future wife. Even the cloak worn by the figure at the foot of the stairs has a household history: the museum identifies it as an Algerian garment Denis had brought back for his son. A real place, a familiar face and a family possession become the materials of his biblical scene.

What does Luke 1:41-42 mean?
Luke 1:39–45 describes Mary traveling to Elizabeth and greeting her. At the sound, Elizabeth’s child leaps in her womb and she is filled with the Holy Spirit. Her blessing recognizes Mary and the child she carries, and she praises Mary’s belief in the promised word.
Luke names Mary’s journey and greeting but does not describe a staircase or a traveling companion. Denis stages the visit as an arrival at a lived-in house, with people above, below and at the window. Elizabeth’s recognition interrupts that ordinary social world: the guest approaching her carries the one she calls her Lord.
The sunlit ascent leads into the greeting that prompts Elizabeth’s recognition and blessing in Luke.
