Lamentations 1:12 · Mary holding the dead Christ

Pietà

William-Adolphe Bouguereau’s Pietà shows Mary looking outward as she holds the dead Christ, surrounded by grieving angels, with a golden vessel and crown of thorns below.
William-Adolphe Bouguereau, Pietà, 1876. Oil on canvas.
Is this nothing to you, all you who pass by? Look around and see! Is there any sorrow like mine, which was inflicted on me, which the LORD made me suffer on the day of His fierce anger?

About the painting

Mary looks directly out of the painting while Christ’s body lies across her lap. The angels gather around them, but her gaze reaches beyond their circle toward us.

What does Pietà show?

Her black mantle forms a dark center beneath two gold halos. Christ’s head falls back beside hers, his arms and legs hanging with the weight of a body that can no longer support itself. Around them, the angels bend their heads, cover their faces, or lean close to Mary.

The bright vessel and basin at the bottom bring the eye down to the crown of thorns. Bouguereau inscribed the vessel in memory of his son Georges, who died in 1875. The painting, signed and dated 1876, brings that personal memorial into its image of a mother holding her dead son.

What does Lamentations 1:12 mean?

In Lamentations 1, Jerusalem is given a voice as a bereaved and devastated woman. Her people are hungry, her children have gone into captivity, and she finds no comforter. Verse 12 calls to those passing by and asks them to look at her sorrow. The speaker is the suffering city.

Paired with the Pietà, that appeal draws attention to Mary’s outward gaze. This is a contemplative connection between two expressions of grief: the city’s words remain rooted in Jerusalem’s catastrophe, while the painting invites us to stay with a mother’s loss.

The appeal to passers-by in Lamentations 1:12 gives words to the attention Mary’s gaze asks of the viewer.
