About the painting

One nun digs in a graveyard at dusk while another sits nearby, with dark trees silhouetted against the fading sky.

About the artwork

The grave and digging tools make rest inseparable from bodily labor and mortality. The seated nun’s stillness answers the other’s effort, while the evening sky widens the space beyond the enclosed garden. Millais gives neither figure an explicit narrative identity, leaving the viewer with the shared setting and their different postures.

Millais took the title from words in a Mendelssohn part-song after hearing his brother sing it. Family accounts connect the setting with Bowerswell and the grave with one studied in Kinnoull churchyard. The religious scene is therefore constructed from observed places, rather than copied from a particular biblical episode.

What does Matthew 11:28 mean?

Matthew 11:28 is Christ’s invitation to those who are weary and burdened. The following verses connect rest with learning from His gentleness and taking His yoke. The promise concerns a relationship of discipleship, not only physical repose or the end of a working day.

The graveyard and evening setting give the painting’s title a further association with death. That is a thematic extension of the paired verse, not its literal setting. Reading the whole invitation allows the image to hold both the nuns’ present work and the larger question of where rest is found.

Matthew 11:28 brings Christ’s invitation to the weary beside Millais’s scene of labor, dusk, and mortality.
