Mark 1:34 · Many people brought to Jesus
Christ Healing the Sick
And He healed many who were ill with various diseases and drove out many demons. But He would not allow the demons to speak, because they knew who He was.
A long wall leads the eye past one waiting person after another. Near its center, Jesus bends toward a sick man, while others sit, lie down, or are carried nearby. Fugel gives the crowd a succession of individual needs.
What does Christ Healing the Sick show?
Jesus’ pale clothing stands out among the darker garments around him. At the left, people carry another figure toward the gathering. Along the wall at the right, bodies settle at different heights, making the line feel both crowded and patient.
The scene is brightly lit. Mark places the gathering described in verses 32–34 after sunset; Fugel’s sunlit arrangement is a pictorial interpretation of healing among many people, rather than a literal rendering of that time of day.
What does Mark 1:34 mean?
Mark 1:32–34 follows the healing in Simon’s house. After sunset, people bring the sick and those with demons to Jesus, and the town gathers at the door. Verse 34 describes both healing from diseases and the expulsion of demons.
The verse also says that Jesus prevents the demons from speaking because they know who he is. Acts of mercy are public, while this testimony to his identity is silenced. The text distinguishes illness from demonic possession; it does not identify every sick person as possessed.
Fugel makes many kinds of need visible along one wall; Mark’s verse holds that breadth of healing together with Jesus’ command of silence.
