About the painting

The pregnant Mary meets Elizabeth on a raised terrace in the left wing of Rubens’s Antwerp Descent from the Cross.

About the artwork

Rubens gives the greeting substantial bodies and a setting that requires movement upward toward the meeting. Mary’s pregnancy is central to the subject: she comes carrying Christ before his birth. The terrace allows the two women’s approach and recognition to unfold across a clear change of level.

The panel belongs to the 1611–1614 altarpiece in Antwerp Cathedral. Across the complete work, Christ is carried in Mary’s womb, in the Temple and down from the cross; the outer wings show Saint Christopher, whose name means Christ-bearer. This wider design gives the Visitation a role beyond opening a chronological sequence.

What does Luke 1:41-42 mean?

Luke 1:41–42 places the unborn children at the heart of the women’s meeting. Elizabeth’s child leaps at Mary’s greeting, and Elizabeth blesses both Mary and the fruit of her womb. The child Mary carries is recognized before he can be seen.

Rubens makes that hidden presence part of the altarpiece’s recurring subject of bearing Christ. The physical greeting remains the biblical event, while its position on the wing adds a connection to the other panels. Looking at Mary’s body alongside the passage explains why this meeting belongs within the larger commission.

Mary’s pregnancy gives the altarpiece its first image of bearing Christ, grounded in Elizabeth’s recognition of the child in Luke.
