Hebrews 11:38
A Saint in the Desert
The world was not worthy of them. They wandered in deserts and mountains, and hid in caves and holes in the ground.
A haloed man kneels on rock near a small cross as two angels approach from above with vessels held before them.
About the artwork
The bare torso and dark cloth at the hips give the kneeling figure little protection from the rocky setting. A small cross and skull-like form introduce devotion and mortality, while the approaching angels bring another register of presence into the solitude. Their vessels are visible, but their contents are not clear enough to name.
The Petit Palais leaves the figure unnamed in its title, A Saint in the Desert. At only 21.5 cm high, the canvas asks us to come close to a scene of immense rocks and approaching angels. What first looks like a distant, inaccessible retreat becomes an intimate encounter with one exposed person. Neither the small cross nor the heavenly visitors securely identifies which hermit Moreau imagined.

What does Hebrews 11:38 mean?
Hebrews 11:38 follows accounts of people whose faith did not spare them persecution, poverty, or violent death. Deserts, mountains, caves, and holes in the ground name the places in which some lived. The writer calls the world unworthy of them, reversing the judgment implied by their exclusion.
The saint in Moreau’s painting is not securely named, and the verse does not identify him. The pairing connects the desert setting with a biblical account of fidelity outside comfort and public honor. The angels belong to the painting’s devotional vision; Hebrews emphasizes the commendation of faith amid lives that remained difficult.
Hebrews 11:38 offers context for the saint’s rocky solitude without assigning an identity the museum title leaves open.
