About the painting

Mary sits beneath the dove of the Holy Spirit, with apostles standing and kneeling on either side and Mary Magdalene nearer the viewer.

About the artwork

Maíno gives the gathering a balanced structure around Mary. The Prado identifies six apostles standing behind her and six kneeling alongside or slightly in front, while Mary Magdalene kneels closer to the viewer in a white tunic and golden cloak. Their different positions turn the descent of the Spirit into a shared encounter.

This is Maíno’s larger, later version of Pentecost, dated 1615–1620, now in the Prado. The oil canvas measures 324 by 246 centimeters. Its breadth allows the fourteen figures to remain distinct within the assembly, while the dove above supplies a single focus for the scene.

What does Acts 1:14 mean?

Acts 1:14 names Mary among the women, apostles and brothers of Jesus who continue together in prayer before Pentecost. Acts 2 then describes the gathered community receiving the Holy Spirit amid a sound like wind and divided tongues like fire. The narrative moves from common prayer to empowered witness.

Mary is not named individually in Acts 2, and the dove is a traditional symbol rather than the form specified there. Maíno’s image draws on the preceding assembly and on Christian visual language to represent the event. The paired verse explains Mary’s presence within that tradition without claiming that Acts describes this exact arrangement.

Acts names Mary in the praying community before Pentecost, providing the context for her central place in Maíno’s image.
