Song of Solomon 5:7
The Song of Songs
I encountered the watchmen on their rounds of the city. They beat me and bruised me; they took away my cloak, those guardians of the walls.
A woman in pale clothing is surrounded by armed men, her figure caught within their close, forceful gestures.
About the artwork
Moreau chose the Song’s encounter with the city watchmen rather than an embrace between the lovers. The large Dijon canvas makes the woman’s vulnerability the center of a crowded scene. The museum reads the treatment as sexual violence, while the biblical verse explicitly describes beating, wounding, and the removal of her cloak; the two levels of description should remain distinct.
The French State commissioned the work in 1852, and it appeared at the Salon of 1853. At roughly three meters across, it belongs to the scale of public history painting. The subject shows Moreau finding a disturbing interruption within a book better known for images of desire, gardens, and mutual praise.

What does Song of Solomon 5:7 mean?
Song of Solomon 5:7 occurs during the woman’s nighttime search for her beloved. She has opened the door too late, sought him, and called without an answer. The watchmen then wound her and take her cloak, after which she asks the daughters of Jerusalem to carry a message of love.
The scene makes the search vulnerable to a city whose guardians harm rather than protect. Its poetic setting does not supply all the motives or circumstances of a prose narrative. Moreau gives those few lines an elaborate public scene, but details added by the painting or its interpretation should not be passed off as additional statements in the biblical text.
Song of Solomon 5:7 is the violent interruption Moreau enlarges into a history painting; the surrounding poem explains the woman’s search.
