Ruth 2:8 · Boaz speaks to Ruth in the harvest field
Ruth
Then Boaz said to Ruth, “Listen, my daughter. Do not go and glean in another field, and do not go away from this place, but stay here close to my servant girls.”
Ruth holds what she has gathered close to her body. Boaz stands beside her in the harvested field, and his words give the foreign gleaner a place where she can stay.
What does Ruth show?
Copping sets Ruth low in the foreground, kneeling in a dark blue dress with grain tucked beneath her arm. Boaz, wearing red beneath a striped outer garment, looks toward her. Behind them, workers bend among the cut stalks while a standing man watches near a tree.
The exchange takes place amid ordinary harvest work. Ruth’s lowered gaze and the difference in their standing positions make the encounter feel unequal; the gathered grain makes clear what is at stake. The kindness being offered will affect where she works and how she is treated.
Bridgeman identifies the image as a color lithograph reproduced in Women of the Bible, published by the Religious Tract Society in 1927. The publication date establishes that this illustration existed by then; it does not establish when Copping first made the original.
What does Ruth 2:8 mean?
Ruth has come from Moab with Naomi and goes out to gather grain left by the harvesters. When Boaz asks about her, his foreman identifies her as the woman who returned with Naomi. In Ruth 2:8, Boaz tells her to remain in his field and stay close to his servant girls.
The next verse makes that welcome concrete: Boaz has ordered the young men not to touch her, and she may drink from the water they have drawn. Ruth responds with surprise that he has noticed her, a foreigner. His invitation offers food, company, and protection within the working life of the field.
Ruth 2:8 gives words to the encounter Copping pictures: Boaz’s invitation turns a stranger’s search for grain into a welcome to stay.
