Psalm 121:7-8
Flight into Egypt
The LORD will guard you from all evil; He will preserve your soul. The LORD will watch over your coming and going, both now and forevermore.
Moonlight spreads across the Holy Family’s night journey. Tanner’s blue-toned scene carries the travelers through a landscape that feels larger than they are.
About the artwork
Moonlight reaches far beyond the small traveling group. The same blue-green light touches the figures, the road, and the low hills, while the thickly worked surface keeps the scene from becoming a crisp topographical view. The family is visible, but its destination is not: the eye can follow the road farther than it can make out the travelers’ faces.
Tanner returned to the Flight into Egypt many times. Here the almost full moon gives the journey an expansive stillness, even though the story’s danger remains. No pursuer has to enter the frame for this to be an escape. Knowing why the family travels changes the meaning of a landscape that might otherwise seem simply peaceful.

What does Psalm 121:7-8 mean?
Psalm 121 is one of the Songs of Ascents. It moves from the speaker’s search for help to assurance that the Creator watches over the traveler without sleeping. The final verses extend that care to coming and going, now and into the future.
The family’s flight is narrated in Matthew 2:13–15: Joseph leaves with Mary and the child at night after a warning about Herod. The psalm is paired thematically with that journey. Its language of keeping and watchfulness gives a frame for looking at Tanner’s vulnerable travelers, without turning their danger into an easy or uneventful passage.
Psalm 121’s watchfulness through the night accompanies a scene whose narrative comes from Matthew 2:13–15.
