About the artwork

The red cardinal’s hat hangs on the wall while Jerome works bare-chested at the table. Though the hat is a later artistic attribute, it makes a visible contrast between an emblem of office and the vulnerable body doing the work. The hand with the pen, not the headgear, occupies the active center of the image.

The skull beside the papers gives that work a limit. Jerome’s translating and interpreting of Scripture takes time from a life that will end; the word he studies is meant to guide lives beyond his own. Caravaggio paints this effort with very few objects, letting the bent head and small movement of the hand carry the concentration.

What does Psalm 119:105 mean?

Psalm 119:105 compares God’s word to light for a person’s next steps. In the surrounding stanza, the speaker is afflicted and endangered but repeatedly commits to God’s judgments and instruction. The light is guidance for a life of obedience, not simply an image of intellectual illumination.

Jerome, who lived centuries after the psalm, gives us a later example of sustained attention to Scripture. The pairing turns the painting’s scholarly labor toward a practical question: how does a word on a page become light for the next step? The psalm’s surrounding danger prevents that light from becoming merely a pleasant metaphor for learning.

The writing figure offers a thematic companion to Psalm 119:105: study serves the word that the psalm describes as guidance for living.
