Proverbs 3:24 · Van Gogh’s room in the Yellow House
The Bedroom
When you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you rest, your sleep will be sweet.
The bed is ready, the chairs are empty, and pictures hang on the walls. Van Gogh turns a small room into an image of desired rest. The strong outlines and simple furniture make each ordinary object insist on its place.
What does The Bedroom show?
A large yellow bed fills the right side, with a red cover and pale pillows. At the left, a chair faces a small washstand holding a basin and jug. Another chair stands near the head of the bed, below a green window; paintings and drawings hang close together above.
The room is Van Gogh’s bedroom in the Yellow House at Arles. This is the first painted version, made in October 1888 and now in Amsterdam. The museum explains that he simplified the perspective and suppressed shadows deliberately. Some colors have changed with age: the walls and doors were originally purple.
In a letter to Theo of 16 October 1888, Van Gogh described color and solid furniture as the means of suggesting repose. The painting therefore carries an intention beyond recording where the bed and chairs stood. It offers the appearance of a place in which the imagination might rest.
What does Proverbs 3:24 mean?
Proverbs 3:24 speaks of lying down without fear and sleeping sweetly. Its surrounding instruction asks the listener to preserve sound judgment and discernment, and verse 26 names the LORD as the source of confidence. Rest belongs to the passage’s larger picture of a life directed by wisdom.
The verse gives a language for trust beside Van Gogh’s carefully furnished room. This is a reflective pairing, not evidence that he painted the proverb. The room expresses his wish for repose; the text directs the reader toward confidence beyond the room itself.
Proverbs 3:24 names rest without fear; Van Gogh’s bedroom offers a concrete image of the shelter and repose a person longs for.
