Matthew 26:39

The Agony in the Garden

Jesus kneels on a rocky rise beneath the dawn sky while three disciples sleep below and an approaching group appears in the distance.
Giovanni Bellini, The Agony in the Garden, about 1458–60.
Going a little farther, He fell facedown and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me. Yet not as I will, but as You will.”

About the painting

Jesus kneels on a rocky rise beneath the dawn sky while three disciples sleep below and an approaching group appears in the distance.

About the artwork

The sleeping disciples lie below the rocky rise where Jesus kneels. Bellini’s uneven ground holds them near their master but apart from his solitary prayer. Farther away, Judas and the arresting party have already begun the approach that will end this interval.

High above Christ, a small, almost transparent cherub offers a chalice. It can disappear against the sky at first glance, but it answers the prayer that gives this scene its subject. Bellini makes the cup of suffering visible while the sleeping men remain unaware of it.

What does Matthew 26:39 mean?

Matthew 26:36–46 describes Jesus taking three disciples with him to Gethsemane and asking them to keep watch. He prays that the cup might pass from him, while submitting his will to the Father. On returning, he finds the disciples asleep and calls them to watch and pray.

Matthew’s cup is the suffering Jesus asks to be spared, even as he submits to the Father’s will. The cherub offering an actual vessel is Bellini’s interpretation of that image; Matthew does not describe this apparition. Beside it, the sleeping disciples and distant arresting party show how little time remains for the companionship Jesus has requested.

The solitary prayer, sleeping companions and approaching party hold together the distress and urgency of Matthew’s Gethsemane account.
