My First Sermon
“Truly I tell you,” He said, “unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.”
A child sits very straight in a large wooden pew. Her red cloak warms the dim interior, and her fixed gaze gives the quiet scene its concentration.
What does My First Sermon show?
The girl holds a fur muff in her lap beneath a black hat with a pale feather. Her shoes rest on a hassock, and a book and gloves lie beside her on the green seat. The high paneled back surrounds her small body, making her attentive presence feel both earnest and vulnerable.
Millais painted his daughter Effie, then five, for this 1863 picture. The Guildhall Art Gallery identifies the setting as a pew in All Saints Church, Kingston upon Thames. It is a particular child in a familiar church interior; the connection with Matthew’s childlike humility is the contemplative pairing offered here.

What does Matthew 18:3 mean?
The disciples ask Jesus who is greatest in the kingdom of heaven. He places a child among them and says they must change and become like little children. The next verse names humility directly: whoever humbles himself like the child is greatest in the kingdom.
The painted girl gives that reversal of scale a visible companion. She has a small place inside an imposing room, yet her attention fills the picture. The passage invites adults to reconsider their claims to importance; her stillness can become an invitation to listen with fewer things to prove.
The child’s small place within the pew invites us to hear Matthew 18:3’s challenge to adult ideas of greatness.
