Luke 4:15 · Jesus teaches in Galilee
Jesus Teaches in the Synagogues
He taught in their synagogues and was glorified by everyone.
Hanging lamps and patterned woodwork surround a teacher in a white prayer shawl. James Tissot gives a richly furnished setting to Luke’s brief account of Jesus teaching in the synagogues of Galilee.
What does Jesus Teaches in the Synagogues show?
Jesus stands in profile at the center-right, his white shawl marked by dark stripes. Another shawled figure appears at the left. A carved railing crosses the foreground, while slender posts and suspended lamps fill the space around them. The room is densely worked, yet Jesus’s face remains easy to find.
Tissot places the teaching within the life of a Jewish place of worship. The close view emphasizes a speaker and the room he shares with others. The museum titles the scene in the plural—teaching in the synagogues—matching the general account of ministry in Luke 4:14–15.

What does Luke 4:15 mean?
After the wilderness temptation, Jesus returns to Galilee in the power of the Spirit. News about Him spreads, and Luke 4:15 records His teaching in the synagogues and the praise He receives. It is a compact summary of His early ministry, before Luke turns to the particular visit to Nazareth.
The next verse describes entering the synagogue on the Sabbath as Jesus’s custom. Read together, the passages locate His teaching within the familiar rhythm of worship and Scripture. The welcome in verse 15 also makes the later hostility at Nazareth more striking; it does not promise that every response will remain favorable.
Luke 4:15 summarizes Jesus’s teaching across Galilee; Tissot draws attention to the human scale and shared worship setting of that ministry.
