Luke 2:34-35
Presentation of Christ in the Temple
Then Simeon blessed them and said to His mother Mary: “Behold, this Child is appointed to cause the rise and fall of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against, so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed—and a sword will pierce your soul as well.”
Simeon holds the child while Mary stands beside him with an open, empty hand beneath the broad blue shape of her mantle.
About the artwork
Champaigne chooses the moment after the child has passed into Simeon’s arms. Mary’s extended hand preserves the movement of the handover, even though it no longer carries him. Her mantle gives her figure a strong presence beside the older man, keeping her response central to the scene.
The Museo de Arte de Ponce identifies this painting as a carefully finished model for a much larger high altarpiece at Saint-Honoré in Paris. Its clear grouping was therefore also a design for public worship. Simeon looks upward with the child, while the older woman at his side turns toward the surrounding people: the intimate handover opens into an announcement to others.

What does Luke 2:34-35 mean?
Luke 2:22–35 brings Mary and Joseph to the Temple with Jesus. Simeon takes the child and praises God for the salvation he has seen. He then addresses Mary with a prophecy that the child will cause many to rise and fall, and that a sword will pierce her own soul.
Simeon’s warning belongs within a wider scene of public testimony. After his song and blessing, Luke introduces Anna, who gives thanks and speaks about Jesus to people awaiting Jerusalem’s redemption. Champaigne’s arrangement allows that outward movement to remain visible beside Mary’s open hand: this child is her son, and the hopes attached to Him extend beyond the family.
The child in Simeon’s arms and Mary’s open hand place his blessing and warning within an intimate act of handing over her son.
