About the painting

Mary and Jesus face one another across a lamp-lit table. Tanner reduces the household encounter to a small, intimate exchange between two people.

About the artwork

Mary rests her face against her hand as Jesus gestures across the table. The white cloth and the small flames hold their faces within a shared circle of light. Martha is absent from this version, leaving no competing activity to draw attention away from the exchange.

The work is pastel and watercolor on paper, small enough to reward close viewing. The Norton Museum describes its scale in terms of intimacy: Tanner can bring people into relation with one another and with the divine through a scene measured in inches. The soft surface lets light spread around the figures, while their facing positions keep the conversation clear.

What does Luke 10:39 mean?

Luke 10:38–42 describes Martha welcoming Jesus into her home while Mary sits at His feet and listens. Martha, occupied with serving, asks Him to make her sister help. Jesus responds to Martha’s anxiety and affirms what Mary has chosen.

Tanner seats Mary at a table rather than literally at Jesus’ feet. The painting therefore translates the passage’s attentive listening into a different domestic arrangement. With Martha outside this composition, the contrast between the sisters becomes less prominent than the relationship between the listener and the one who teaches.

Luke 10:39 centers the act of listening that Tanner isolates in this quiet encounter across a table.
