Luke 1:30-31
The Annunciation
So the angel told her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. Behold, you will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to give Him the name Jesus.”
Mary stands alone among white lilies in a sunlit Dutch landscape, with no visible angel in Hitchcock’s Annunciation.
About the artwork
Hitchcock allows the landscape to carry a sacred event without introducing a winged messenger. The white lilies surround Mary and preserve an established association of Annunciation painting, while her solitary figure keeps the encounter inward. Sunlight makes the field feel like a place that continues beyond the moment named in the title.
The American artist spent much of his life in Holland, and this 1887 painting brings the subject into that familiar world. Its peasant Virgin belongs to the setting around her. The choice asks the viewer to recognize the biblical event through attention, title and traditional flowers rather than through a fully staged heavenly arrival.

What does Luke 1:30-31 mean?
Luke 1:30–31 records Gabriel reassuring Mary and announcing that she will conceive a son to be named Jesus. The reassurance answers her disturbance at the greeting. The chapter will continue with a promise about the child’s reign, her question and her eventual assent.
The invisible messenger is Hitchcock’s artistic choice; Luke makes Gabriel an active speaker. That omission changes how the image is read. Mary’s presence among the lilies becomes the visible center, while the passage supplies the words and the unseen relationship that the landscape alone cannot tell.
The solitary figure and lilies invite the viewer to supply Gabriel’s announcement from Luke while attending to Mary receiving it.
