Luke 1:30-31
The Annunciation
So the angel told her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. Behold, you will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to give Him the name Jesus.”
Gabriel and Mary exchange golden words inside a tall church, with patterned paving beneath them and a dove descending along rays of light.
About the artwork
Van Eyck gives the small painting an extraordinary density of texture. Gabriel’s jeweled clothing and colored wings face Mary’s blue dress, while the church rises above them through arches and windows. The open book, lilies and patterned floor keep the viewer moving between the figures and their carefully described surroundings.
The dialogue itself becomes visible. Gabriel’s greeting runs toward Mary, and her reply is painted in reverse and upside down, directed toward heaven. The work dates to about 1434–1436; originally painted on panel, it was transferred to canvas. Its material precision holds an encounter whose setting and written speech are deliberately symbolic.

What does Luke 1:30-31 mean?
Luke 1:30–31 contains the reassurance and promise of a son, but the painting draws on the larger conversation. The dove and descending light refer to the explanation of the Holy Spirit’s action in verse 35, while Mary’s written answer comes from her assent in verse 38.
The church interior is an artistic setting rather than a place specified in Luke’s account of Nazareth. By combining those elements, van Eyck lets several parts of the exchange coexist. Reading the inscriptions and following the light makes the painting a sequence of messages within a single luminous room.
The golden dialogue and descending light gather Gabriel’s promise, the Spirit’s action and Mary’s answer into one richly detailed encounter.
