John 3:4
Study for Christ and Nicodemus on a Rooftop
“How can a man be born when he is old?” Nicodemus asked. “Can he enter his mother’s womb a second time to be born?”
Nicodemus sits low on a mat in this small rooftop study. Tanner returns to a conversation whose questions matter as much as its quiet nighttime setting.
About the artwork
Nicodemus sits low on a mat, with his back partly turned toward us; Christ faces him from a higher seat. The open floor between them makes their different positions easy to compare. Tanner had explored the meeting in his 1899 Nicodemus, but this small study gives the older listener a more visibly lowered place in the conversation.
Mosby suggests that the study may relate to a later commission from the Cheyney Training School for Teachers. The connection remains possible rather than established. Tanner’s return to the subject is clear, however: the learned man arriving with questions continued to offer him a way of painting instruction as an encounter between people, rather than as a teacher delivering a public address.

What does John 3:4 mean?
Nicodemus comes to Jesus at night and acknowledges Him as a teacher from God. Jesus responds by speaking of the birth needed to see God’s kingdom. In John 3:4, Nicodemus asks how an adult can be born again, interpreting the statement in terms of physical birth.
Jesus’ answer shifts the conversation toward water and the Spirit. Nicodemus’ difficulty gives the exchange its form: a recognized teacher must confront something his existing categories do not explain. Tanner’s seated listener gives that process a human presence, while the rooftop is an artistic setting not specified in John.
John 3:4 locates the study within Nicodemus’ effort to understand what Jesus means by a new birth.
