Luke 23:56
Return from the Cross
Then they returned to prepare spices and perfumes. And they rested on the Sabbath, according to the commandment.
Mary and John occupy the tall, narrow board together. Tanner concentrates the aftermath of the Crucifixion into the closeness of two returning mourners.
About the artwork
Mary comes forward with lowered eyes, while John stands close behind her and rests a hand near her shoulder. Other mourners remain visible farther back. The large figures let grief register through their proximity and the support of a hand, without requiring an expansive gesture.
Compare Tanner’s Return from the Crucifixion, where a procession is small within a broad landscape. This upright composition brings two of the mourners near enough for their relationship to carry the scene. John’s presence beside Mary also gives the return a forward-looking dimension: the death has left people responsible for one another.

What does Luke 23:56 mean?
Luke 23:55–56 follows the women who accompanied Jesus from Galilee as they see the tomb and the placement of His body. They return to prepare spices and perfumes, then rest on the Sabbath in accordance with the commandment. The passage holds practical care and religious observance within the first hours of grief.
The painting’s Mary-and-John subject is connected more directly with John 19:26–27, where Jesus entrusts His mother and the beloved disciple to one another. The Luke verse is a thematic accompaniment to their return, not a claim that these two figures are the women preparing spices.
The Luke pairing concerns care and rest after the death; John 19:26–27 supplies the closer narrative connection for Mary and John together.
