What does “What Is Truth?” Christ and Pilate show?

Pilate’s back occupies much of the left side. His pale, red-bordered garment catches the light, and one hand extends toward Jesus. Christ wears a dark red robe and a narrow draped mantle; His hands are out of sight behind His body.

A sharp band of sunlight crosses the patterned floor and stops near Christ’s feet. Above it, the reddish wall and dark doorway offer little distraction. Ge reduces the meeting to two bodies, one questioning gesture, and the contrast between a powerful figure in light and an exposed figure in shadow.

What does John 18:38 mean?

Pilate’s question follows Jesus’ explanation of His kingship and His coming to testify to the truth. Jesus has said that everyone who belongs to the truth listens to His voice. Pilate then asks what truth is and goes outside to say that he finds no basis for a charge against Jesus.

John records no further answer from Jesus before Pilate leaves. Ge holds the encounter at that unresolved point. The painting invites us to consider whether a question leads to listening, while the rest of the trial exposes the distance between Pilate’s recognition of innocence and his eventual decision to hand Jesus over.

John 18:38 supplies Pilate’s question; Ge’s division of light and shadow asks us to look closely at the person before him.
