Job 38:2–4 · The LORD answers Job
The Lord Answering Job out of the Whirlwind
“Who is this who obscures My counsel by words without knowledge? Now brace yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall inform Me. Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Tell Me, if you have understanding.”
The storm has a face. Blake places a great white-bearded figure within the circling wind, his arms stretched above the people below. After so much argument about Job’s suffering, the picture turns toward the arrival of a voice.
What does The Lord Answering Job out of the Whirlwind show?
Curving bands of cloud and drapery surround God’s suspended figure. At the left, Job and his wife raise their faces and hands; the three companions bend low at the right. The outward reach of the arms contrasts with the compressed bodies beneath them.
This drawing belongs to the Morgan Library & Museum. Made around 1805–1810 for Thomas Butts, it combines pen and black ink, wash, watercolor, and graphite on paper. Its pale colors and fluid lines differ from the later engraved illustrations of Job.
Blake gives the divine speaker a human form. That figure, the gathered family, and the friends turn the encounter into a visual drama; Job 38 itself describes the LORD speaking from the whirlwind.
What does Job 38:2–4 mean?
Job 38 begins with the LORD answering Job after the long speeches about his suffering. Verses 2–4 challenge the limits of human knowledge and ask where Job was when the earth’s foundations were laid.
The questions continue through the sea, the dawn, and the world’s hidden depths. The speech does not begin by explaining the cause of Job’s losses. It places his questions within a creation whose reach exceeds what he can see or govern. Blake’s vast, circling figure makes that difference of scale visible.
Job 38:2–4 shifts the conversation from human explanations to God’s questions; Blake pictures the overwhelming presence of the speaker.
